The pattern files about the L7 filters are located in the directory /etc/l7-protocols.

For more details you should read the how-to http://l7-filter.sf.net/Pattern-HOWTO

I am stuck in updating L7 filter Patterns.
I downloaded the actual l7-protocols-2008-03-24 from l7-filters.sourceforge.net and untarred/unzipped to:

    /etc/l7-protocols AND /var/register/system/net/L7/..

but even after a reboot I cannot see the updated patterns in web interface.

    Any help appreciated

You should not untar the compressed archive that contains the L7 patterns, but just put the downloaded archive in the file:

    /var/register/system/net/L7/l7-protocols.tgz

After this operation you need to reboot the system to activate the new layer 7 patterns.
